Volunteer Teaching Assistant at Extra Time Project (Russell Martin Foundation)

ETP is an alternative provision for KS3 students who are finding mainstream education challenging for a number of reasons. Many of them have found themselves falling into negative routines at school and some are at risk of permanent exclusion.

The three main aims for any pupil that attends the programme are to increase attendance, curricular progression and SEMH wellbeing. This is carried out through a creative and confidence building curriculum alongside receiving core English, Maths and Science lessons. Pupils are monitored continuously throughout the 12-week placement with Extra Time as well as the first full term back in mainstream education.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

Our volunteer teaching assistants play a vital and varied role within our centres. Primarily, they support our young people, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities through building and nurturing constructive relationships and promoting their inclusion, acceptance and self-esteem. We value our students’ differences and interact with them based on their individual needs to help them to learn, develop and achieve specific learning goals. Our volunteer teaching assistants support this by implementing specific strategies based on what has been agreed by our teaching and senior staff, to ensure all our students have equal access to opportunities.

In this role, our volunteers are guided by our teachers and provide essential support to them by assisting with lessons, monitoring and recording progress, providing feedback, supervising students, providing 1:1 support and assisting with the planning of learning activities.

What induction, training and support is offered?

To ensure our volunteers feel happy and confident in their roles, we provide all necessary training as well as on-going support and feedback from a dedicated member of staff.

The whole team at the Extra Time Project is friendly, passionate and extremely dedicated and our volunteers are an integral part of what we do - we hope that volunteering with us is a valuable and enjoyable experience.
