Volunteer Activity Companion at Crossroads Care Brighton And Hove

Crossroads Care East Sussex, Brighton and Hove is a registered Charity, network partner of the Carers Trust, that has been providing vital respite breaks to unpaid Carers for 35 years. Our core purpose is to improve the quality of life of unpaid Carers and the people they care for, to maintain and improve their physical and mental well-being.

We are looking for volunteers for our daybreak service for older people with extra care needs such as dementia on a Friday at Tower House Community Centre, Brighton, 10am to 3pm.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

We are looking for volunteers for our daybreak service. You may be required to assist with preparations for the day, meeting and greeting service users and/or their carers and assisting at meal times.
You’ll be befriending, supporting and encouraging service users to engage in activities and conversation and provide the staff with practical help to ensure the smooth running of the day and best outcomes for service users.
Engaging service users in activities, including but not restricted to:
- Singing
- Arts & Crafts
- Physical Activities
- Cognitive Activities
- Conversation
- Reminiscence Activities
These may be led by staff, an outside facilitator or yourself (if, as and when you feel confident to do so). We offer a person-centred service and activities may be in a group or 1-1 depending on the needs and requirements of the service user.

What induction, training and support is offered?

We will provide you with the learning and training needed to become a valued member of our team and gain the core skills necessary to your role. This will include but is not limited to; health and safety, first aid, safeguarding and infection prevention.

As you will be working with vulnerable people, a DBS check will be required. This will be provided for by Crossroads.

What skills or qualities are needed?

- Good communicator, the ability to adapt communication to the needs of the individual.
- Ability to motivate.
- Patience and empathy.
- Experience in caregiving or support would be beneficial.
