Established in 1846, The Sussex Archaeological Society, the UK’s oldest group of its kind, is dedicated to preserving Sussex heritage.
We also offer a finds identification service and host various walks, talks, and conferences on Sussex’s archaeology and history. Our archaeological collections cover East and West Sussex, including the award-winning Collections Discovery Centre at Fishbourne Roman Palace in partnership with The Novium.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
We are looking for a variety of volunteers at all of our heritage properties across Sussex particularly at Lewes Castle and Michelham Priory for a variety of shifts and hours to cover Tuesday-Sunday, Bank Holidays and Mondays during the school holidays.
Roles include Visitor Welcome Volunteers, Maintenance Volunteers, Shop Volunteers and Daily Site Volunteers. Details of the tasks involved and skills required can be found in our role descriptions/ role specifications on our website.
What induction, training and support is offered?
In return our Volunteers will receive:
· Training (where required)
· Travel expenses paid for up to a maximum of £6 (per shift)
· Free car parking at Michelham Priory and at Fishbourne Roman Palace
· 20% discount in our gift shops
