Trustee at Sight Loss Charity at Sight Support Worthing

We are a well-established charity with our purpose supporting the independence and wellbeing of visually impaired people. Our clients experience barriers to opportunities and inaccessible places, products, and services and our purpose is to improve independence and inclusion which we do through our range of activities. We offer our services at our premises in central Worthing, out on location or in client’s own homes.
Our core services are events, clubs and classes; tech support; counselling; welfare advocacy; sports inclusion and we also run external disability awareness training workshops.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

We’re looking for a new Trustee to join our Board of six, who ideally has knowledge or experience of visual impairments, eye conditions, sight loss or lived experience of another sensory disability.

This is an exciting time to join SSW, as we are developing our strategy for the coming years and this is a collaborative project involving, trustees, staff and service users, who are all motivated to drive our charity forward and make a difference in the community.

As part of our Board of Trustees, you will play an important role in shaping the strategic direction and governance of the charity. You will oversee the charity business, ensuring that our work is carried out in accordance with the Charity Governance code.
This is a voluntary non-executive governance role. The expectation is that you will be able to attend 10 of 12 monthly Board meetings as well as other events such as training workshops, the AGM and occasional fundraising events. Although there is no minimum time commitment, it would suit someone who has some flexibility to oversee and contribute to charity projects.
All pre-agreed expenses will be reimbursed.

We are seeking someone with commercial and/or nonprofit experience with professional skills they can offer to the charity. It would be beneficial to have an understanding of disability inclusion.

What induction, training and support is offered?

Introduction to the team of staff and trustees. Resources given for new trustees to learn about the role. Opportunity to attend some Board meetings without commitment. Attendance on our CPD certified Visual Impairment awareness training.
Lots of support via the other trustees and Executive Manager.

What skills or qualities are needed?

Some of the role is remote and matters are dealt with via email. The Board meet for 2 hours once per month, usually at our premises in central Worthing, aiming for 10 out of 12 per year.
Skills required are basic level tech to be able to respond to emails and occasional virtual meetings. Other than that we are looking for someone with professional expertise that could provide input into how we govern and operate. Any legal, HR or commercial knowledge would be beneficial.
We would be keen for more trustees with a visual impairment or other sensory disability, or lived experience through a close family member.
We are open to different knowledge and experience an individual can bring to our charity.
