Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project was set up in 1981 and is a registered charity. We provide practical support, education, advice and much more to those in poverty, in poor living conditions, benefit claimants, the unwaged, pensioners, families and those on low incomes and suffering social exclusion and poor wellbeing.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
BUCFP is recruiting volunteers to run our Tea Bar/Café, where we offer teas and coffees to anyone who is at the centre.
Volunteers' main duty is to make refreshments, to keep the tea bar stocked up, clean and tidy. An important part of the role is to be welcoming to new people, explaining what BUCFP does and directing them to the day coordinator or Centre helper if someone needs help or is in distress. Tell people about what goes on here and offer the course brochure if they are new. You will be working either alone or in pairs also running the crisis/emergency food bank and liaising with the Day Coordinator to see who is eligible to receive food parcels
What induction, training and support is offered?
Volunteers are provided with induction before they start, then they are supported by the Food Project leader and volunteer coordinator.
Volunteers get their travel expenses reimbursed (up to £5), are provided with training while performing the role and additional training opportunities as they progress if needed and available. It's a great opportunity to socialise, meet our centre users and meet other volunteers.
Volunteers are also entitled to have a free meal and a reference after 3 months of volunteering with BUCFP.
What skills or qualities are needed?
As a volunteer you will need:
To be aware of good hygiene practices.
Good numeracy skills.
Be welcoming.
