Take Shelter Oral History Volunteer at Take Shelter

Take Shelter CIO runs and manages the only school air raid shelter open to the public in the south. We are based at Downs Junior School, Brighton. Our main activities consist of a school visits and community open days where visitors can tour the air raid shelter and take part in wartime-themed activities. We have recently been award a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a community project to preserve and share the memories of the last generation who lived through the war. What does the opportunity involve doing?

You will be capturing the memories of wartime veterans from across Brighton so, with their permission, we can share their experiences with visitors to Take Shelter. This will involve oral history interviewing and, where possible, you will be buddied up with one of the film making volunteers. Volunteers will take part in an introductory session to the project which will include a tour of the air raid shelter. They will be receive free oral history before embarking on the interviews. Once the interviews are have taken place, volunteers will transcribe the recordings ready for use either in thew new project displays, touchscreens, website or social media.

What induction, training and support is offered?

What support and training will I receive?
All volunteers will receive an induction and including background to Take Shelter and the National Lottery Heritage Fund project including a tour of the air raid shelter. Oral history training will be provided by experienced professionals and ongoing support will be provided by the Project Officer. All volunteers will conduct their interviews in pairs to provide support to each other.

What skills or qualities are needed?

What skills, qualities and experience do I need?
No experience or qualifications are necessary as this is a good opportunity to gain new skills. However this role would suit people who:
• Are welcoming, approachable and helpful
• Have good communication and listening skills
• Are proactive with a good eye for detail
• Enthusiastic and interested to learn about the project and life in wartime Brighton
• Reliable, friendly and polite
• Comfortable working as part of a team; supporting other volunteers
• Are able to work with and without supervision
