Refugee sponsorship support at Nolander

We are a group of freinds and family and welcoming to more in order to help settle a refugee family in Brighton.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

I am looking for volunteers to join our efforts for sponsoring refugees in Brighton. Our aim is to host a refugee family through a government scheme called Community Sponsorship that gives power to ordinary people to directly resettle refugee families to their community.

We will support the family from the moment they step off the plane, through their journey of resettlement as they stand on their own two feet - helping them to access local services, navigate their neighbourhood, learn English, find work, and build social connections.

If you think this is something you would like to get involved with then I would love to discuss with you. Please come along for a coffee and chat to see if we are a good match and I can tell you more about the scheme. Just to give you an idea of the work that we need to do here is an outline of tasks.
Build a group of volunteers
Register Nolander with Charities Commission
Get consent from Brighton Council
submit sponsor application to Home Office
Fundraise £9,000
Find a property
Welcome the family
Support with language and employment
Prepare the family for independence

I would say two of the most important but also challenging steps are number 1 and number 6. I have already started the process and have spoken with a number of people who are keen to help, have set up a website, emails, bank account, and more. You can contribute as much as you wish but the minimum I would say is about half a day (4hrs) a week.

What induction, training and support is offered?

training about community sponsorship for refugee by Reset.

What skills or qualities are needed?

None, an interest in the community and compassion for people fleeing war and persecution.
