Inside every prison there is an Independent Monitoring Board made up of members of the public from all walks of life who monitor every aspect of the prison. The team of volunteers are the eyes and ears of the public who help to make sure that prisoners are being treated humanely and given the opportunity to change their lives.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
Our role is to monitor day to day life in Lewes prison and ensure proper standards of care and decency. A visit might include time spent in the kitchens, accommodation and recreation areas, healthcare or observing how well those at risk of self harm are treated. If a prisoner has an issue they are unable to resolve they may ask for help eg lost property, family visits, or serious bullying allegations. You will usually need to commit to at least two visits a month.
What induction, training and support is offered?
Successful candidates will receive in-depth training in all aspects of the role, with a mentor to support their development. The training takes around 6 months, and is a mix of on-job, classroom and on line training modules. The time commitment during training is likely to be 4-5 visits a month.
Please note, it is a Victorian building with many stairs and heavy gates.
What skills or qualities are needed?
You do not need any special qualifications or experience because we will provide all necessary training and support. You do need to be enthusiastic and open minded, have good people skills and sound judgement. As long as you are 18 years or over, your background can be a student, a person of working age or retired.
