General Volunteer at Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project

Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project exists to advance environmental protection by stopping as much reusable timber as possible from ending up in landfill and indiscriminate incineration.

We do this by providing a collections service below the cost of a skip or other disposal options, bringing the material back to our premises for sorting, preparation for re-supply, or to be transformed into beautiful objects and furniture - benefitting everyone.

Operating the Project, and collecting this timber resource, affords training and volunteering opportunities for many currently not working or in financial hardship due to social exclusion.

The Project trains staff and volunteers to run the business. Skills learned include retail expertise, customer service, business administration, and woodworking, with many volunteers gaining paid employment with the Project once trained.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

The Wood Store is looking for volunteers for a variety of roles. During the induction we’ll find the one which works best for you or you can get involved in all aspects of our work. The roles available are:

-Staffing the vans to collect timber
-Preparing timber for sale
-Working in the shop and serving customers
-Making furniture and wooden products in the workshop
-Educating the public through publicity, displays, and social media
-Supporting or mentoring more vulnerable volunteers

Some people also get involved with sales, marketing, designing products, or any other tasks needed to operate a busy and successful social enterprise and charity. Make no mistake – we can get really busy!

What induction, training and support is offered?

On induction, our Volunteer Co-ordinator will go through the code of conduct, health & safety policy and, give a tour of the premises.

Volunteers will receive supervision and training no matter the role they choose.

Important note:

Once trained, volunteers need to be able to work independently and not be at risk to themselves or others. We regret we can’t accommodate those who require constant support due to the nature of the work undertaken.

What skills or qualities are needed?

No previous experience is required, all skill levels welcome.
