New Venture Theatre, Bedford Place, Brighton BN1 2PT, is a long established non-profit making theatre run entirely by volunteers. We have our own (Grade 2 listed) premises in which there are two auditoriums, bar, dressing rooms, workshops and other facilities. We stag up to 10 plays each year and you can find out more at www.newventure.org.uk
What does the opportunity involve doing?
We are looking for someone to oversee the operation of our Front of House (FoH) procedures at the New Venture Theatre. The theatre has its own licenced bar at which bottled drinks, tea and coffee are served before and after performances, and during any interval. The bar is also open for occasional theatre social and fundraising events - usually 2 or 3 a year. No food other than crisps is sold and no outside organisations or persons use the theatre/bar facilities. The FoH Coordinator is responsible for:
• Overseeing a small team comprising the Stock Control and Bar Duty Rota Coordinators to ensure the efficient running of the bar, its equipment and security;
• Ensuring the bar and adjacent areas are ready for each performance or event, and the till, card machine etc are operational and bar serving volunteers know their roles and responsibilities. Note: the cleaning of the theatre and bar areas is undertaken by a commercial cleaner.
• Ensuring good co-ordination between the FoH procedures and other aspects of the theatre, particularly the Box Office and Stage Management operation;
• Periodically reporting to the Theatre Committee on the operation and financial performance of the bar.
The theatre stages up to 10 plays a year which each run for 8 performances over 9 days and at which the FoH Coordinator, or a suitable deputy, should be present.
This is a great opportunity to play an important role in the running of dynamic theatre company in the heart of the city.
What induction, training and support is offered?
There will be full hand over and training from the current post holder, who is remaining at the theatre, as well as support from the current Stock Control and Bar Duty Rota post holders, and committee members.
