Charity trustee at Brighton West Pier Trust

The West Pier Trust is the charity that owns the West Pier ruin and the land on which it stands.
We celebrate the history of the Pier, manage the site, work with our tenant Brighton
i360 and plan for the future of this important part of Brighton & Hove’s seafront. Current projects include the planned restoration of an original West Pier kiosk for reinstatement on the West Pier Piazza.

Our base, the West Pier Centre in the recently renovated arches east of i360, hosts exhibitions, talks and events, provides information to visitors, and delivers schools’ education sessions.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

We are looking for new volunteer trustees to join our Board, ideally people with experience of being governors or charity trustees. However we would also welcome applications from less
- experienced people who would like to be more involved in Brighton & Hove’s seafront and its
heritage and would be willing to learn about the requirements of governance. We will provide support and induction for anyone new to the role.

We would particularly welcome applications from people whose perspectives are currently underrepresented on our Board.

The Board meets five times a year, usually online, with some additional time needed for reading papers and occasional events.

What induction, training and support is offered?

We will provide support and induction for anyone new to the role.

What skills or qualities are needed?

Applicants should be interested in the West Pier, Brighton & Hove's seafront and its heritage. We are looking for people who would like to be involved in shaping the Trust's strategic future, can offer specific skills and are comfortable with the idea of serving on a committee.

Previous trustee experience is not essential, a thoughtful approach, good judgement, and a willingness to learn are just as important as specific skills. We value people who can work collaboratively, bring different perspectives, and commit to preparing for and attending meetings.

Experience in areas such as project management, education, heritage, community engagement, communications or property can be helpful, but these are not essential.
