Tower House Community Centre is a friendly place that supports local older people to live well and free from loneliness or isolation. We are part of a charity called The St Vincent de Paul Society which exists to help people in poverty of all kinds. At Tower House we provide a wide range of activities and other social and wellbeing opportunities that help an older person feel at home, make friends and stay healthy. We have a small paid team, and are lucky enough to be supported in our work by over 20 volunteers. We are based in a Grade 2 listed Edwardian building in the Preston Park area of Brighton.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
The Coffee Shop at Tower House has now been open for over 2 years, offering a friendly and welcoming space to relax for local older people who join us to attend clubs and classes - or simply for coffee and cake.
This lovely opportunity is to volunteer with us to help serve hot drinks and light refreshments to our varied coffee shop customers - we serve things like home made cake and toasties. We are open to the public of any age, but often serve people over 50.
No cooking experience is required however there is the chance to learn skills in our commercial kitchen which serves hot meals to those attending our clubs, alongside our kitchen team and cooks if this is of interest.
You will be joining a welcoming and happy team, all committed to making Tower House a success and a place loved by all who use it.
This role is very key to the success of Tower House, as our cafe assistants are the first people that our regular customers and newcomers will see - and so being able to work independently, offering a warm welcome to visitors in our relaxed environment, along with a friendly chat and a smile will be really important.
There will be some till use, however this will be covered in a short induction to the role. There will always be someone closeby to help out if things get busy - we are a tight knit team and all help one another out and look out for one another.
