We are an arts charity that works with dance professionals and people across the region to make the South East a thriving home for dance.
We support dance artists that specialise in all forms, from breakdancing to ballroom, with funding, tailored advice and networking opportunities throughout their careers. As passionate believers in the health and wellbeing benefits of dance, we also work hard to bring movement to as many people as possible too – particularly those who might not have had the opportunity or the confidence to give it a go before.
In 2022 we opened The Dance Space to the public. Located in the heart of Brighton & Hove, our state of the art dance studio and community hub has been over a decade in the planning and making and we are so excited to welcome every body inside.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Board in our second full year in The Dance Space and as we continue to develop our programmes and extend our offer for local people, communities, and dance artists in The Dance Space and across Brighton, the wider South East region and beyond.
Our Board of Trustees are highly engaged and together offer a wide range of expertise to our governance. They support our strategic development, oversee all aspects of our work, ensuring we maintain the highest standards in all areas of our activity and that we meet our charitable and legal obligations.
We are looking for a new Trustee to join the Board and take on the role of Vice- Chair
You will join a welcoming, committed and skilled group of Trustees who champion and advocate for our work regionally, nationally and internationally sharing our passion for dance and the contribution it can make to health, wellbeing and placemaking. Trustees work to their individual strengths as a collaborative team in the interests of the organisation.
The Trustees work closely with the Chair of the Board and with the Artistic and Executive Directors (the Senior Leadership Team), helping to achieve the ambitions and aims of South East Dance and deliver the agreed vision, mission and strategic objectives.

What skills or qualities are needed?
Essential:
Experience of effective non-executive leadership and governance
Experience of chairing meetings
Experience of charity governance and committee work
Good people skills and the ability to act with tact and diplomacy
Experience of operating effectively in a supporting role
Ability to act swiftly and deal with complex issues
Proven ability to act impartially and with fairness whilst respecting confidences
Willingness to represent South East Dance at external events
Ability to devote sufficient time to fulfil the Vice-Chair’s role effectively
Highly networked and with the ability to nurture relationships
Desirable:
Relevant specialist skills- e.g. in business development, strategic financial planning, law
An interest in dance/arts and culture
