The Hummingbird Project supports young people from a refugee background, many of
whom arrived in the UK as unaccompanied children. We also actively campaign for the
rights and protection of young refugees at a local and national level.
We are based in Brighton and work with young people living in the city and across East and
West Sussex. Our approach is rooted in relationships, trust, dignity and solidarity. We are committed to
creating a welcoming and inclusive organisation where young people are listened to,
valued and supported to shape the work that affects them.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
The Treasurer is an important member of our Board of Trustees, helping the Board to fulfil its
responsibility for the charity’s financial health, sustainability and good governance.
The treasurer will help the board to:
● Provide oversight of the charity’s financial health and sustainability.
● Review and help the Board understand budgets, management accounts, cash
flow and financial forecasts.
● Support the development and monitoring of the charity’s annual budget.
● Ensure appropriate financial controls and processes are in place.
● Help the Board understand financial risks and opportunities and provide
constructive challenge where needed.
● Oversee the preparation and presentation of the charity’s annual accounts and
liaise with our independent examiner/accountants as appropriate.
● Ensure the charity meets its legal, regulatory and financial responsibilities.
● Support longer-term financial planning and sustainability.
● Help ensure that financial decision-making reflects our mission, values and
responsibilities to the young people and communities we work with.
The Treasurer will work closely with the Interim-Director and the Admin and Finance Officers,
as well as the Board, to help ensure that our financial resources are managed responsibly
and effectively. You will not be expected to manage the charity's day-to-day finances or act as an
accountant. Rather, you will provide oversight, guidance and support to the Board and staff
team.
What induction, training and support is offered?
All Hummingbird staff and volunteers receive a Hummingbird induction and there will also be the opportunity for training and development as is relative to the role.
What skills or qualities are needed?
We are looking for someone with good financial acumen who can bring confidence,
curiosity and constructive challenge to our financial oversight. You do not need to be a
qualified accountant, but you will need to be comfortable understanding financial
information, asking the right questions and helping the Board make sound financial decisions.
Experience of charity finance is particularly desirable, including an understanding of charity
accounts, budgets, cash flow, financial controls and the regulatory responsibilities of
charities.
