Trustee at Lost Cats Brighton

Lost Cats Brighton is a registered charity, run by a small team of dedicated volunteers committed to reuniting lost cats from Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas, via a free online 'Lost, Found and Reunited' register on our website and via our Facebook page.

The charity is also committed to helping unowned cats and those who need to be rehomed in the Brighton and Hove area. Our cats are fostered short-term in private homes prior to finding them a permanent home.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

Our trustees are legally responsible for the governance of the charity. This means they must
make sure that Lost Cats Brighton achieves its objectives, which are set out in our governing
document.

The trustees ensure that we have a strategy, and that our assets and resources are only
used for charitable purposes in line with the governing document.

The Trustees make sure that Lost Cats Brighton operate in line with any relevant laws,
particularly the Charities and Companies Acts.

Our Trustees have a collective responsibility, working together to achieve the best interests
of Lost Cats Brighton. This is in relation to both lost cats and cats in need of rescuing and
rehoming.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Governance
Working with Volunteers
Representing Lost Cats Brighton

We welcome applications from people with a cross-section of skills and experience. As well as being trustees of the charity, our trustees are also involved with the organisational running of the charity and management of volunteers and are actively involved in overseeing the charity's day to day work.

We are particularly looking for someone who brings ideas and enthusiasm in relation to fundraising, with experience / knowledge of in-person and event co-ordination.

We are also keen to find someone with a good understanding of and experience in social media to help ensure our charity keeps apace with changes in modern life.

What induction, training and support is offered?

Potential new trustees are invited to shadow a board meeting, and will be provided with detailed information about Lost Cats Brighton as a charity as well as more general information about the role of a charity trustee.

Support is provided from the experienced group of trustees already supporting the charity.

We have 4 in-person Board Meetings per year and 4 online Operations Meetings. Trustees are expected to attend these, prepare reports on their given area in advance of the Board Meeting and devote sufficient time to read through the board papers in advance.

There may be other events that trustees are invited to attend, and other opportunities to get involved. We estimate the time commitment to be a minimum of two hours per week.

What skills or qualities are needed?

This role blends relationship building, strategic planning, creativity and data driven decision making with face-to-face teamwork and in-person outreach community work.

Skills required include:

Core governance and a good understanding of the legal duties of a charity trustee
An ability to think strategically
An excellent communicator
Financial awareness
Lived and / or professional experience to compliment the existing board members
