Social Connection Volunteer Befriender at Justlife

We provide one-to-one healthcare, housing and well-being support for people living in temporary accommodation. Although they have a roof over their head, the people we work with are homeless and need professional support to maximise their chances of moving away from homelessness. Without support, many are at risk of falling into rough sleeping or worse.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

Justlife’s Social Connection project pairs someone moving away from homelessness with a befriending volunteer who supports them in overcoming social barriers, isolation and loneliness.

We aim to match people with shared interests, identities or life experiences.

Once matched befriending volunteers and the person they are matched with meet one-to-one and do an activity of their choice, whether that's going for a walk, trying something new or just going for a coffee and a chat.

Matches usually meet weekly for a minimum of 6 months or longer. The matched pair and the social connection coordinator will determine this through regular reviews.

What induction, training and support is offered?

All new volunteers will undergo our training programme, which includes online training, group training*, and a quiz.

Volunteers access monthly one-to-one supervision, reflective practice sessions, and ongoing training opportunities.

*Please note: The next group training will be on Saturdays, June 14th and 21st, and you must attend both sessions.

What skills or qualities are needed?

We seek people who are passionate about supporting others to build links with their community and are non-judgemental, reliable, patient, and flexible. The experience of mentoring others with lived experience of homelessness or working with the homeless community and other marginalised and vulnerable groups would be an asset but isn't necessary. We welcome people who have lived through experiences of homelessness.
