We are a choir for people impacted by homelessness and other forms of marginalisation. Our aim is for our members (including our volunteers!) to have fun, build their confidence, improve skills and wellbeing, and
make friends. We also provide a hot, healthy meal, cooked by our volunteer team on a rota.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
We’re looking for sopranos and basses to join our choir as musical volunteers between now and January to support the sound of our choir at our weekly rehearsals on Mondays 5.30 -9.30 at All Saints Church, Hove. This is to help us get stage-ready for our Big Christmas Gig on 15th December at the Brighton Dome.
Purpose of the Music Volunteer:
● Be part of a rostered musical team who give section specific singing support in rehearsals and at gigs.
● Assisting rehearsals in a musical way on Mondays 5.30 – 9.30 – this may include, helping the Choir Director set up, ‘anchoring’ a part, leading warm ups, working with small groups or soloists etc. (see below for more details)
● Contributing to generating a positive atmosphere that celebrates having fun whilst singing together
What induction, training and support is offered?
Volunteers will receive an induction to our choir and access to our online induction videos, which include videos around handling challenging emotions, trauma-informed practice, and more.
As we are run with BHT Sussex, volunteers have access to their full training catalogue.
What skills or qualities are needed?
● Have strong musicality, picking up the music and harmony parts quickly in a rehearsal environment. We expect you to be able to do this by ear, like our members. You are not expected to read music (but if you can, that’s good to know!)
● Are confident singers. We need you to sing audibly (and accurately) for our members balancing the confidence and ability of your section: singing loudly when they need you to and singing less loudly when they’ve got it!
. Have the ability to get on well with our members, who may be experiencing personal difficulties.
● Have a calm and non-judgemental attitude
● Ask for support or guidance when they need it, from more experienced volunteers as well as staff
● Follow health and safety regulations, safeguarding and confidentiality policies (once explained)
