Growing vegetables on an allotment to donate to food banks at Nurture Through Nature

Nurture Through Nature grows produce for food banks. Without our donations, food bank users may just receive packets and tins in their food parcel.
Volunteers help us grow the veg and maintain the plot. We work in groups of a maximum size of 9 volunteers.
Our aim to grow produce to donate. There are other projects in Brighton that focus on therapeutic gardening and gardening techniques if that's your thing.

Our gardening year restarts on 3 February this year. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Volunteering groups run on weekdays - actual days vary.

What does the opportunity involve doing?

Get active in the fresh air with a friendly group and give back to your community.

We welcome adults (over 18's only) wanting to learn how to grow vegetables outdoors in the fresh air with a friendly team.

Activities include digging and clearing beds, sowing seeds, weeding and harvesting vegetables. No previous experience of gardening is required. We will make sure that tasks suit your health and abilities and show you what to do.

You don't need to commit to a period of time or number of sessions, you can sign up for as many or as few sessions as you like so this is a good way to try out volunteering.
'
Our project is open almost all of the year except for 8 weeks from mid December to the beginning of February when veg growing takes a rest. We will still accept applications to volunteer but may not get back to you promptly during that period.

We work outdoors and will make sure you are working in ways that are safe and we provide as much hand sanitiser as you want. We have a hut for group talks and for break or to shelter from the weather.

What induction, training and support is offered?

All volunteers receive an induction including health and safety instructions on their first day and ongoing informal training and support from the group facilitator.

Volunteering with us is suitable for people who want to learn how to grow veg and people who just want to get active outside for fun and enjoyment.

We have facilities for refreshments and a compost toilet on site.

What skills or qualities are needed?

None required, although volunteers must be able to arrive at the plot at 10 am and have a reasonable level of fitness to be able to manage tasks like weeding, and collecting crops. You need to be able to manage on uneven ground as allotments, by their nature, are sloping and accessed by makeshift paths.
