Sussex Surplus is a community embedded social enterprise taking fresh and surplus food in danger of being wasted and transforming it into long-life products and tasty meals.
We run 'gleaning' days at farms across Sussex, create meaningful paid opportunities for young people, sell jars of soup wholesale to independent shops, feed the community at our weekly café in East Brighton and provide catering services on request.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
Our volunteer teams help us to rescue tonnes of produce from farms across Sussex, throughout the year. This surplus produce is redistributed to community food groups across Sussex, reducing food waste and feeding people experiencing food poverty. This ancient practise of food redistribution is called 'gleaning'.
We coordinate gleaning days on farms across Sussex, support volunteers with transport, and you can usually take home a delicious bag of fresh produce at the end of the day!
The day will involve harvesting produce of some kind; it could be picking apples, snipping salad greens, digging for parsnips, all sorts! We let you know what we'll be gleaning and where in advance, so you can decide if it works for you.
Here's what other volunteers have said:
'Gleaning days are such a joy: fresh air and exercise in great company and all for a good cause, what more could you ask for? As a full-time carer I find these days are a real boost to my mental health ... it's a win-win.' - Zoe, Tenterden
'There's a triple bonus of exercise, social chat and making a difference!' - Mike, Brighton
What induction, training and support is offered?
Before every glean we notify volunteers what we will be gleaning, where, and when. Once on our mailing list it's up to volunteers to sign up to individual gleans if and when it works for them.
In advance of a glean we send through timings for the day, location, lift-sharing opportunities, what to wear, what to bring, etc.
At the start of every glean we brief volunteers on the plan for the day, the farm layout, why there is surplus produce and how to harvest produce. Support with harvesting is available throughout the session.
If we're lucky the farmer will be around to talk to us about the farm and the crop too!
