Welfare and Safety Officer at Safe Haven Sussex

Safe Haven Sussex CIC provides supported accommodation across Brighton and Hove for vulnerable adults who are homeless. We aim to provide our residents with a safe place to live where they can and gain the confidence and skills needed to move on to independence. The Welfare and Safety Officer will work evenings and weekends, as part of the Welfare and Safety Team, to ensure that our residents are safe, that their concerns are responded to, and that the accommodation is secure and maintained.

This role is varied and will require understanding how to support vulnerable individuals, ranging from security to care and support.

Key Responsibilities:

To conduct house visits and welfare checks on daily basis. This involves a considerable amount of driving between houses across Brighton and Hove.
Provide empathetic, non-judgmental support to our residents, who have a range of support needs including mental and physical health difficulties and substance use.
Safely de-escalate challenging situations and support residents to live together.
Respond to urgent and emergency situations and provide appropriate supportive response to ensure the safeguarding of residents, visitors and neighbours; contact emergency services, e.g., police, ambulance, fire, when required.
Keep accurate records both manually and digitally, using our internal recording processes. This includes recording all communication with service users; reporting incidents and breaches of Licence Agreement; recording the storage of service user belongings.
To report property maintenance issues raised by residents or identified by you using our internal processes.
To deliver post and items required by the residents to the houses.
Occasionally you will escort/move residents to another property within Safe Haven Sussex, when you will be expected to support the resident to pack and take their belongings. You may also be required to escort residents to the Local Authority Offices or other services, e.g. Hospital, Doctors, Move On accommodation.
You will sometimes be required to coordinate the signing of new/updated service user paperwork to facilitate moves between properties.
Hold the Out of Hours phone for residents to contact a weekly rota basis and respond to emergencies and other concerns which require attendance to the houses.

Work Pattern:

Monday 4pm-10pm (6 hours)
Thursday 4pm-10pm (6 hours)
Friday 4pm-10pm (6 hours)
Saturday flexible between 11am and 10pm (4 hours)
Sunday 10am-12pm (2 hours)
You will hold the Out of Hours Phone fortnightly on Fridays from 5pm-9am Saturday and every Saturday from 9am-9am on Sunday

Requirements:

A full clean Driving Licence, use of your own car and business insurance required.
Adhere to SHS Policies and Procedures at all times and uphold the values and standards of Safe Haven Sussex.
Attend staff meetings, briefings, team building days and training as and when required and as directed by your Line Manager. This may require working outside of the normal pattern of hours.
Attend periodic work reviews with your Line Manager as required.
The ideal candidate will be located within or near to Brighton and Hove due to requirement for occasional on-call work and welfare callouts during anti-social hours.
The role requires walking up and down flights of stairs at a variety of properties and sometimes helping move belongings, so a reasonable level of fitness and mobility it essential.

Overtime:

Flexibility is required as there will be times you are required to work overtime, such as if dealing with an emergency situation. There is a call out payment for attending houses outside of working hours for emergencies.
We are looking for someone who will be able to cover additional evenings and some weekends during periods of annual leave and staff absence.

Driving and Mileage:

Mileage is compensated at the gov rate of 45p per mile for using your vehicle at work and mileage is recorded using Mile IQ app on your work phone.
You will be issued with a parking permit for use when visiting properties to carry out welfare checks.
