This will involve taking accurate measurements, writing detailed text descriptions, photography and the editing and manipulation of images. You will also assist with the implementation of the Treasure Act (1996) within Sussex and in the training and supervision of volunteers, self-recorders and student placements. You will be required to attend finds days and Sussex events; sometimes at weekends; in order to facilitate and promote the work and aims of the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
You will gain experience from working alongside experienced colleagues and contribute to the growth of the scheme in the region. The role will also be a part of the wider Portable Antiquities Scheme partnership, led by the British Museum, and you will become a part of that national network.
To apply for the role, you need to have a broad knowledge of British archaeology. Applicants will have direct experience working with archaeological objects which may have been acquired either through a degree, or equivalent experience. You will also have knowledge and a basic understanding of the Portable Antiquities Scheme; the Treasure Act and the issues surrounding metal detecting. You also need good to be a good communicator both verbally and in writing with an ability to shape your message to different audiences. You will be organised and thorough, with good attention to detail and experienced at using databases.
