About the Role
The successful candidate will deliver engaging Functional Skills sessions that support learners to build confidence, develop core literacy and numeracy skills, and progress towards recognised qualifications.
Teaching is delivered in small groups of up to six learners, with a second tutor supporting each session. Groups may also be split into smaller working groups during sessions to allow for more personalised teaching and targeted support.
Learners on the programme benefit from a supportive environment where teaching approaches are adapted to meet individual needs and learning styles.
Key Responsibilities
-Deliver Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry Level 3 to Level 2) to KS4 and Post-16 learners
-Plan and deliver engaging, active learning sessions tailored to individual student needs
-Work collaboratively with a second tutor to support small group and split-group delivery
-Support learners with SEND and SEMH needs through inclusive and flexible teaching approaches
-Develop lesson plans and learning materials that promote participation and understanding
-Monitor, assess, and record student progress towards qualification outcomes
-Provide constructive feedback and support to help learners achieve their potential
-Maintain accurate records of attendance, learning progress, and assessment outcomes
-Work collaboratively with the wider tutor team to support students’ overall development
-Contribute to preparation activities and support students during work experience placements in June and July
About You
The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a passion for supporting young people, and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs.
You will be confident delivering Functional Skills in an alternative provision environment and committed to creating a positive and motivating learning atmosphere.
Requirements
-Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent– Essential
-Experience teaching English and/or Maths, ideally Functional Skills
-Experience working with young people aged 14–19
-Understanding of SEND and SEMH needs within an education setting
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills
-Ability to deliver creative, engaging, and active learning approaches
-Organised, reliable, and able to adapt teaching strategies to individual learners
-Experience in alternative provision or supporting learners who struggle in mainstream education would be highly desirable.
This is a freelance role with an initial one-year commitment from September 26 - July 27.
Hours include teaching delivery, planning, preparation, and supporting work experience sessions.
