SPIN aims to provide information proactively to single-parent families in Brighton & Hove & the surrounding areas of Sussex via our private group https://www.facebook.com/groups/SPINSINGLEPARENTS
SPIN aims to improve the emotional and financial wellbeing of single parents. This is done through informing the members of low cost and free activities, events, training, goods, donations, free & discounted tickets, individual funding and project opportunities.
For over 20 years, SPIN has worked alongside single parents experiencing disadvantage, becoming a known point of contact for members seeking information, advice and guidance, delivering projects and practical support by distributing donations. We now have extensive experience supporting people who face cultural, social, and structural barriers to accessing information. In addition understanding the challenges of those seeking support with language needs and trauma histories. We create informal environments online on our private Facebook group and face to face where members feel safe to share their experiences. As single parent volunteers, we bring a wealth of lived experience that enables existing and new members to trust us to find solutions and advocate and make referrals on their behalf. Throughout this time, we have developed relationships with local partner organisations who refer individuals to us because of our reputation for being reliable and respond quickly to people’s needs.
We make private Facebook posts with member contributions and discussions on a daily basis and in particular about local services and resources to support their heath. Recognising how damaging isolation is we alert them regularly to many events that are free, low cost and discounted opportunities and we coordinate regular monthly meet ups for existing and new members, creating a space where participants can ask for advice.
Single parents who are experiencing financial difficulties and in emergency or temporary accommodation receive donated household goods that we request from members of the wider community on social media. We then provide collection and delivery to homes alongside an ongoing project with Pelican Parcels for a wide range of items for children.
Current projects incude free data minutes and texts, National Trust Wakehurst tickets.
There are volunteering opportunities to support single parents with problem solving and solution-focussed work from home and one day per week on a friday in an office in central Brighton. please do enquire you will find we are a diverse team and very welcoming.
