Possability People is a charity committed to helping you make more things possible for you in your life, no matter what your situation. We work with disabled people, older people, younger people or anyone with an impairment or long term health condition.
Whether it’s helping you find help at home, or giving you moral support or advice, we have knowledge and expertise to advise you on what’s possible. We believe in a society where anything is possible, regardless of ability.
The Get Involved Group (GIG) works towards equality by inspiring disabled people to identify barriers and define solutions.
The GIG gives disabled people in Brighton and Hove a voice when services are planned and changed and we work closely with the council and CCG. We engage our members through meetings every 6 weeks (currently online), as well as consultations, mail-outs and a monthly round-up. GIG members include disabled people, their friends and carers in Brighton and Hove. We have also recently received fu
What does the opportunity involve doing?
This will mainly be in the form of a regular phone call to check in on their wellbeing, and have a friendly conversation. However, it could also be via email, video conference, WhatsApp etc. if the member prefer this.
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, we have been unable to carry out many of our usual functions, and in response to the needs of our members, we have provided support and guidance via telephone, video-calling and social media, in addition to our usual monthly newsletter.
The Get Involved Group is looking for new volunteers to help us to stay in contact some of our more vulnerable members, who are at increased risk of isolation whilst the services, networks and communities they would usually access are unavailable.
What induction, training and support is offered?
Each volunteer will have a full induction with the Office & Resources Manager in order to familiarise themselves with the overall working practices of the organisation. There will also be a full induction into the role and continued support from the staff team.
Volunteers have one-to-ones every three months with their project lead and this is more frequent during the induction period.
There will also be team meetings and opportunities to join our social get-togethers throughout the year.
What skills or qualities are needed?
Maybe you have done or have some of these?
These are some skills, knowledge and experience we are looking for. However, if you don’t have these don’t worry as we can offer training and development within these areas.
• Experience of offering befriending or telephone support
• Experience of working with groups and one-to-one
• Experience of working remotely
