One Garden is a newly rediscovered and restored Victorian Walled Garden in the heart of Stanmer park. It will open to the public in 2020. There will be a variety of opportunities within the garden for Volunteering and Community Planting days. There will be free-to-hire event spaces and a range of schools workshops and community events. The garden will be free to enter and will feature a market shop, plant sales area and kitchen style cafe.
Due to Covid-19 we will not be working with Volunteers in the garden until later this year. However please do register your interest and we will keep you up to date with progress in the garden and contact you about volunteering once this is available again.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
Come and be part of the newest community project in your area.
This is an exciting opportunity open to anyone of any age and background to be part of a new team from the beginning, to learn new skills and be part of a community project. With the help of people like you, there can be greater awareness of the project in the community and the garden can be cared for sustainably for the long term.
This is a physical role, where you’ll work as part of team in most weathers. You will be assisting the One Garden Brighton Team by taking part in a range of horticultural activities. This could include maintenance of the formal gardens - which will involve planting, weeding, pruning and watering. You may also get involved with caring for the plant collection within the Palm House, renovation of the Long Border and assisting with Plant Sales, whether that be growing or selling.
We offer a rewards and recognition scheme for regular, committed volunteers.
What induction, training and support is offered?
You will be working alongside a trained member of staff to assist you in any tasks you carry out, making sure you learn the correct skills and get the most out of your time with us. You will also have an induction prior to using any form of specialist equipment.
What skills or qualities are needed?
We’re looking for people who are:
• Enjoy working in all weathers
You don’t have to have had any previous experience in horticulture. All we ask is that you buy into our aims and values and have an enthusiasm for the role.
Whether you think you have the skills and experience or not, we’d still like to hear from you, as everyone has something they can offer.
Q: DO YOU HAVE AN UPPER OR LOWER AGE LIMIT?
We encourage all ages from 11 to 100! If you are between the ages of 11 and 16, we do ask that you have written consent from your parent or guardian.
Q: IF I HAVE A DISABILITY, CAN I STILL VOLUNTEER?
Yes - where at all possible. We will do all we can to accommodate your individual needs.
