Volunteering Matters is a national charity creating and supporting volunteer-led projects across the UK. Our Lifelines project focuses on activities and support for older people across the city, with the aim of improving health and wellbeing, as well as combating loneliness and isolation.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
To provide telephone befriending to one or two beneficiaries per week for approximately 30 minutes per call. Through your conversations, you will be providing a connection to somebody who might be quite socially isolated and checking in on their wellbeing, acting as a link to accessing further support if necessary.
This role began as a response to the COVID-19 outbreak, in recognition of the increased levels of difficulty faced by many older people needing to shield and lacking additional support to help meet basic everyday needs.
Outline of responsibilities:
Agreeing a mutually convenient time with your befriendee and consistently sticking to it. Contacting the Volunteer Manager if you are unable to make your call or unable to get through to your befriendee after trying several times.
Developing a rapport with your befriendee and managing the conversation, while remaining conscious of the need for excellent listening skills and allowing plenty of time for them to respond.
Paying close attention to any signs that your befriendee might be struggling to look after themselves or be lacking essentials that they need to manage daily life. This must be reported back to the Volunteer Manager, no matter how small the issue may seem.
Maintaining a cheerful and upbeat tone to the phone calls and trying to leave your befriendee with something positive to take away from them.
What induction, training and support is offered?
We will provide you with a full induction and training session for the role.
Your induction will take place remotely while our staff continue to work from home.
Ongoing support will be provided by the Volunteer Manager and project staff.
