We provide one-to-one healthcare, housing and wellbeing support for people living in temporary accommodation. Although they have a roof over their head, the people we work with are homeless, and need professional support to maximise their chances of moving away from homelessness. Without support, many are at risk of falling into rough sleeping or worse.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
The Social Connection Project is a brand new initiative that has been created to provide essential support to people moving away from homelessness. Our team of befriending volunteers will help our clients address the main challenges of isolation and social barriers by helping to:
Make healthy social connections.
Become involved with activities around their interests, and that would benefit their physical and mental health.
Self-manage their lives.
The volunteer will meetup the person they are matched with in a community space, e.g. coffee shop, weekly for minimum of 3 to 6 months or longer term 6months to 1 year.
There will be a loose program/pathway to follow that would be agreed by both parties. They may be occasionally asked to accompany the beneficiary to an event or social club if that is beneficial.
What induction, training and support is offered?
All new volunteers will undertake our training programme which includes online training, group training and a quiz.
Volunteers access monthly one to one supervision and regular peer support meetings, and on going training opportunities
What skills or qualities are needed?
We are looking for people who are passionate about supporting people to build links with their community, are non-judgemental, reliable, patient and flexible. Experience of mentoring others, lived experience of homelessness, or working with the homeless community would be an asset but isn't necessary.More info
