YMCA DownsLink Group is a charity working to transform the lives of vulnerable young people across Sussex and Surrey. We work to prevent youth homelessness and provide a home to 763 young people every night. We reach a further 10,000 young people and their families through our other key services, such as counselling, support and advice, mediation and youth work, so that all young people can belong, contribute and thrive.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
We currently recruiting volunteer mentors to support vulnerable young people from across Sussex. Positive Placements Mentoring is part of the More Than a Room service offer. Volunteer mentors will work to support 16 – 25 years old, who are NEET (not in education, employment or training), on their journey towards education, employment or training and who would like extra support in achieving their goals.
What induction, training and support is offered?
Volunteers will be offered a thorough induction, as well as training and support throughout their time with YMCA DLG. There will also be additional opportunities to get involved with wider YMCA DLG activities and build experience with the wider organisation.
What skills or qualities are needed?
All sorts of people become mentors with YMCA DownsLink Group and we encourage applicants from all sections of the community. To become a volunteer mentor you don’t need to have specific formal qualifications but you will need patience, resilience, empathy and tolerance. You will also need to be able to relate well to young people and enjoy spending time in their company. A sense of humour is essential!More info
