Impact Initiatives has provided Advocacy Services for over fifteen years. The services have developed over time changing to meet the current needs of those who use them and the service currently provides a range of community and self-advocacy services to people with disabilities in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex.
Impact Advocacy Services deliver person-centred services with individual needs and preferences at the core. We provide a range of advocacy support enabling people with disabilities and health needs to access highly effective, independent, quality and confidential advocacy, ensuring people have rights that are respected, voices that are heard and real choice and control over their lives.
What does the opportunity involve doing?
We are looking for someone to provide one-to-one advocacy in the community to people with physical and sensory disabilities, acquired brain injuries, and autism.
The work of a Volunteer Advocate involves:
• Respecting your partner as an individual.
• Listening to what your partner has to say.
• Respecting the confidentiality of your partner.
• Maintaining regular contact with your advocacy partner.
• Helping your partner access information and services.
• Ensuring your partner is aware of choices available to them.
• Encouraging your partner to advocate for themselves where appropriate.
• Representing the views of your advocacy partner as and when appropriate.
• Supporting your partner in the decisions they make.
• Attending regular supervision sessions with your advocacy worker.
• Attending training events as necessary.
What induction, training and support is offered?
Volunteers will be given induction and training appropriate for this role and for any specific tasks to be undertaken. Some volunteers will be allocated an Impact email address, the use of and confidentiality of which will be explained during induction.
The Service Manager has responsibility for volunteer involvement in the service, including dealing with any complaint or grievance relating to volunteers. The volunteer's designated supervisor will provide day to day support and supervision, identify training requirements and countersign expenses claims.
Volunteers will be assigned a named contact person who will provide regular support. Support sessions will provide the opportunity for ongoing dialogue about the development of the volunteering role, in addition to any advice and guidance as needed. Where the volunteering role is emotionally demanding, these sessions will also give volunteers the opportunity to access emotional support and - if required - specialist supervision.
Impact will provide any equipment and other resources required for volunteers to fulfill their roles.
What skills or qualities are needed?
• An understanding of advocacy principles;
• Ability to support people to express their views, wishes and feelings;
• Ability to ensure those most vulnerable have a voice;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
• Experience of working with people with disabilities.
